Winter

I’ve been thinking about how your perception of winter can change depending on your location. The winter can be melancholy in the city where the sky is gray and the snow turns black from car exhaust within hours of falling. It can be harsh out on the Midwestern plains or the dessert mesa where there’s nothing to slow the wind. I woke up last night to a bit of howling wind whipping at the back of the house. This morning, here in Taos, it was still and quiet. White. As far as the eye can see, white. Beautiful. I let the dogs out in the front yard and enjoyed watching them romp around in the newly fallen snow. Sometimes just watching my dogs and their joy for the simple things, renews my inspiration for life.

Earlier this week, we were in Alamosa, Colorado at Don Richmond’s Howling Dog Recording Studios where we have been working on our new cd. The mountains up there have such amazing shades of blues and whites in the winter. At dusk the sky above the mountains turns to surreal pastel hues of pink and purple. It just doesn’t look real.

I have a new appreciation for winter…living in a place where people get excited about snow. And I haven’t even tried skiing here yet! If I become a skier, I’ll really be converted to a winter-lover.

Here are some photos I took behind the studio on Tuesday. A hose left running to help an over-flowing cistern created an unbelievable display of ice.
